Easy New Year’s Clutter Clearing + Recycling For Good

As part of New Year’s resolutions, many of you are probably thinking about clearing out clutter, being greener, and doing more good for your community. Here are two easy ways to start off the new year.

Gather up all those holiday cards sitting on your mantle along with old birthday cards and thank you notes and send them to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children’s card recycling program. Operated by Kids’ Corp., a program for the children at St. Jude’s Ranch to learn entrepreneurship skills, the children participate in making the new cards by removing the front and attaching a new back. The result is a beautiful new card made by the children and volunteers. The benefits are two-fold: customers receive green holiday cards for use and the children receive payment for their work and learn the benefits and importance of being green.

You can also gather all those leftover crayon stubs and pieces and send them to National Crayon Recycling Program operated by Crazy Crayons. This program has made it possible to stop more than 77,000 pounds of unwanted crayons from going into landfills by recycling them into new, handmade crayons. I wrote more about this program here.

Later this week I will be posting about a wonderful local opportunity to swap out your clothing AND your children’s clothing for new items at a free Mother + Child Clothing Swap!

How are you starting your cleaning and greening resolutions for 2012?
